I Am

About

I was born in Scotland and emigrated to Canada as a young child. I have lived in four provinces, from the Maritimes to BC, and completed my Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Prince Edward Island. I've seen the country a few times!

Real Estate Developer & Publican

Since 1995, I have been involved in the purchase, development, conversion & sale of over $600,000,000 worth of multi-family real estate in 9 provinces & 2 states.

Since 2014, I have been the owner of The Lion Rampant Scottish Pub & the Maple Bay Convenience Store (previously a liquor store) in Maple Bay.

Since 2021, I have been a director of Anya's Journey Foundation, a charity created to build an all-ages accessible playground at Fuller Lake.

Issues

Why am I qualified to represent you on North Cowichan Council? Strong business experience, community involvement & connectivity. I do not shy away from a challenge & love making things happen. I believe in accountability & oversight. I believe in strong fiscal stewardship. I believe in strong, resilient communities. I believe in sustainable resource development. I believe in empowering people to make their own informed decisions. I believe in supporting small businesses, as that's who 65% of Canadians work for! I believe in solving the housing crisis in our communities.

Fiscal Stewardship / Taxation

North Cowichan exists because of citizens' & business owners' tax payments. It's imperative council & staff understand this fully, and work to trim budgets where necessary.

Sustainable Resources

Canada is rich in resources, and North Cowichan is no different. Sustainably developing those resources, for all members of our community, is critical to the overall health, wealth & resiliency of North Cowichan citizens.

Housing

Living costs are through the roof. Homes are out of reach for many. Rental availability is next to impossible to find. Renovictions are now "normal". And there's nowhere for displaced residents to go. As a developer, I have a solution.

Community Security

Every day there seems to be more issues of personal and home security - thefts, break-ins, blatant drug-use, safety near schools, etc. The Cowichan Valley has seen more homelessness & drug use in the middle of the day. For the safety of our families, we need a real action plan.

Land-Use Issues

To get a building permit, development permit, rezoning or even something as simple as a shed or a temporary use permit, can take AGES! There are a few solutions - empowering staff & removing roadblocks are just a few ideas. Let's come up with solutions!

Other Issues

There are countless issues that residents need help with or are questioning - the OCP, municipal engagement, infrastructure upgrades, recreational options, attracting qualified workers (medical especially) to the municipality, etc.
